Tracks: Management & Strategy

You’re a manager in the learning and development industry. You’ve proven yourself as a strong ID or eLearning developer to get to this point. But the skills that got you here are not necessarily the same ones that will make you successful as a manager. You’ll need to learn a new set of skills to focus on your own developmen while creating a plan for others, with limited resources and support.

This session will provide the tools and steps to becoming more productive for those already in a management role, and for those hoping to transition into management. You’ll explore strategies for involving your team, leveraging your interpersonal skills, hiring right, and managing your budget in addition to avoiding common pitfalls and derailing behaviors that could have a negative impact on your management role. We’ll review how to manage the workflow of your department, prioritize projects based on the overall company needs, set deadlines and deliverables, delegate tasks, evaluate and give feedback, and how to hold learning and development professionals from your department accountable for their work. You’ll learn how to plan for your own development, despite the challenge of limited resources and support, to make a visible contribution in your existing management role, new management role, with a new team or organization altogether.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to establish personal credibility as a learning and development manager utilizing the same skills you demonstrated as a eLearning developer, instructional designer, instructor, trainer, or LMS administrator
  • Behavioral interviewing strategies and techniques for hiring and onboarding members of your team
  • How to avoid the pitfalls of management including jumping to conclusions on incomplete information, focusing too heavily on the details and small stuff, and not trusting others
