When we create training, we hope that the participants will perform more effectively as a result. Sadly, training often fails to change the behavior of learners. No matter how hard we try to create engaging lessons, thought-provoking discussions, and inspiring content, our learners transfer little to their day-to-day roles. This is a frustration for designers of learning who spend countless hours creating and updating learning materials, only to see little change in employee behavior. However, scientific research in this area suggests that making some simple tweaks to our learning designs can result in dramatic changes in employee behavior post-training.

In this session, you’ll learn research-proven methods for designing learning experiences that transform learner behavior. You’ll start by gaining a deeper understanding of what learning transfer is and by exploring the key drivers of behavior change. Armed with this new understanding, you’ll then be presented with multiple applicable approaches for turning research best-practices into real-life tools and templates. For example, you’ll learn about the research on goal setting in behavior change and how you can use this research to create a learning action plan template to help your training participants to turn their learning into action. You’ll walk away from this session equipped with multiple new templates and approaches based on sound academic research that will transform your training into behavior-focused experiences that result in improved employee performance.

In this session, you will learn:

  • Why behavior change is the goal of all training
  • What the research on various learning design approaches has identified as being most influential
  • How to use marketing techniques to prime participants to learn before the training even begins
  • How to strategically influence the managers of learners for maximum performance return
  • How much practice you should include in your learning solutions to ensure new behaviors are maintained post-training
  • How to create a learning action plan template that can be used in instructor-led training or web-based training
